If you’ve been planning your open-concept kitchen remodel for a few years, and still haven’t gotten around to it, you’re in luck! The open concept isn’t going out of style any time soon. It is still top of the list for kitchen remodel trends in 2024, along with some other design choices that have stuck around. Think white cabinets and lots of light. Other features, like counter islands shorter than 6ft, are making their way out, but who doesn’t want more counter space, anyway?
According to the 2024 Houzz U.S. Kitchen Trends Study, the top three upgraded features are countertops, backsplash, and cabinets. In fact, as many as 91% of renovating homeowners redo their countertops, and 86% resurface their backsplashes! As far as color goes, green is the most popular for the kitchen at large. That can include the walls, the cabinetry, or even the backsplash. Wood tones are also on the rise, but while white continues to be the most common cabinet color, blue is the top choice for counter islands.
While we’re on the subject of surfaces, let’s talk about the kitchen remodel trends that focus on the backsplash! Homeowners are opting for their backsplashes to extend to new heights this year. This feature most commonly covers the wall behind the sink and cabinet area and extends to the cabinets, but 10% of homeowners are now choosing to take it to the ceiling. No doubt, this number will increase as trends grow bolder. The most popular backsplash materials are ceramic or porcelain tile, engineered quartz, or natural stone.
Homeowners are choosing to prioritize updated appliances that allow for wi-fi connectivity and/or appliances controllable by smart phones. Touch screen displays, apps, and other features for updated useability are on the rise, with smart-home connectivity in mind. Control your oven, dishwasher, or Crock-pot remotely to keep up with this year’s kitchen remodel trends. You can even get a refrigerator that tells you when someone left the door open!
More than half of homeowners anticipate changing needs due to aging, accommodation for an aging relative, or pet-related needs. This means designing for safety, functionality, and longevity. As a result, kitchen remodel trends for this year focus on features like pullout cabinets, extra lighting, and wide drawer pulls. Rounded countertops, nonslip floors, and wheelchair-accessible doors and pathways are also a major focus.
