Remodeling is very different from new construction because your existing home becomes the job site. For better or for worse, you get to have a first hand view of everything from start to finish. The novelty of having workers in your home can wear off quickly. With home improvement survival in mind, here are a few things to consider when living with construction:

Communication:

Good communication with your project manager is the KEY to a successful remodeling project. Plan on speaking with your project manager daily. His or her primary goal is to keep you informed. If you are concerned about anything at all, please tell him or her immediately. It's in his or her best interest to keep you happy!!

Preconstruction Meeting:

A preconstruction meeting is an excellent way to identify and discuss issues that will need to be addressed.

Some topics that could be discussed are:

• Method of Communication
• Job Site Access
• Deliveries
• Storage Area
• Personal Belongings
• Security
• Safety
• Parking
• Clean Up
• Material Selections

Changes:

     Changes that are made after the original contract is signed will affect your job's budget and timing.

Change Orders:

     Realize that all change orders need to be signed by you before the work is complete.

During Construction:

     This is the time when communication is most important!

Please address any issues that arise concerning the following:

• Employees
• Subcontractors
• Daily clean-up
• Changes and change orders
• Anything that is important to you!

Post Construction:

Go over your project very carefully. Make a list of any items that need to be fixed and/or addressed. Decide if you are satisfied with the final product and cleanliness of the space. Go over the final bill especially if changes were made after the original contract was signed. Your project manager wants to know when you are truly happy. Only then, the project can be considered complete.
